What is the difference between a healing abutment and a cover screw?
A cover screw is placed below the gingiva and requires a second surgery for exposure. A healing abutment passes through the gingiva, guides soft tissue emergence profile formation, eliminates the need for a second surgery, and achieves a more ideal transmucosal contour.
How do I select the appropriate emergence height?
Measure the distance from the implant platform to the gingival margin, and choose a healing abutment that extends approximately 1ā2 mm above the gingiva. Too short an abutment may lead to soft tissue collapse; too long an abutment may compress the gingiva.
How do I choose between titanium alloy and PEEK healing abutments?
Titanium alloy offers high strength, can be repeatedly sterilized and reused, and is suitable for longer healing periods (>3 months). PEEK is more flexible, has a gingivaālike color, and is suitable for temporary aesthetic transitions or short healing cycles.
Does the healing abutment require daily cleaning by the patient?
