Product Overview

Rapid Maxillary Expander (RME) is an orthodontic appliance indicated for maxillary transverse deficiency. It is fixed to the upper posterior teeth via bands or cast full crowns, with a central expansion screw. Periodic activation of the screw generates transverse force, gradually opening the midpalatal suture to widen the maxilla, creating space for crowded teeth and improving occlusion. It is indicated for maxillary transverse constriction, posterior crossbite, and mild crowding in mixed or early permanent dentition.

Rapid Maxillary Expander (RME)

Rapid opening of the midpalatal suture

By periodically turning the expansion screw (typically ¼ turn per day), a strong transverse force is generated, rapidly opening the midpalatal suture within weeks to achieve skeletal expansion.

Stable Retention

Fixed to the maxillary bilateral posterior teeth via bands or full crowns, the appliance cannot be removed by the patient, ensuring continuous and stable expansion force with high compliance.

Precision Screw Design

High‑precision stainless steel expansion screw with finely machined threads for smooth rotation. The expansion per turn is controllable, facilitating precise clinical adjustment.

Robust Soldering

The stainless steel framework is soldered to the bands or full crowns, ensuring a stable structure that is resistant to deformation or fracture.

Fabrication Workflow

Clinical evaluation
Assess maxillary transverse width, severity of posterior crossbite, and arch morphology to confirm indications for expansion.
Impression taking
Take maxillary and mandibular impressions, and record the occlusal relationship.
Design and fabrication
Design the expander framework on the model → Solder the framework and screw → Finish and polish.
Clinical try‑in
Try in the appliance intraorally to check band/full crown adaptation, the distance between the framework and the palate, and screw operability.

Cementation
Cement the appliance to the abutment teeth using glass ionomer or resin cement.
Activation instruction
Instruct the patient's caregiver on how to turn the screw, and provide activation frequency (typically ¼ turn per day) and precautionary measures.
Regular follow‑up
Schedule weekly or bi‑weekly follow‑ups to monitor expansion progress and remaining screw travel until expansion is completed.
Retention phase
After expansion is completed, maintain the appliance in place for 3–6 months to allow new bone formation to stabilize, then remove it.

Indications

·Maxillary transverse deficiency

·Unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite

·Mild to moderate maxillary dental crowding

·Skeletal expansion in mixed or early permanent dentition (ages 7–15)

·Adjunctive treatment for functional mandibular deviation

·Pre‑surgical expansion for combined orthodontic‑orthognathic treatment

FAQ

What age is best for a rapid palatal expander?

The ideal age is about 7 to 15 years old, when the palate bone hasn’t fully fused yet, so the expander can work really well to widen the upper jaw. In older patients, the bone is more fused, so expansion is less effective and usually needs surgery to help.

What is the recommended age range for a rapid palatal expander?

How long does a rapid palatal expander need to be worn?

Does a rapid palatal expander cause facial changes?
